La Habana is a young province that bases its economy on agriculture and fishing and gets ready for potential tourist offers without overlooking the formation of professionals. Two higher learning centers operate in this territory: the Universidad Agraria, in the municipality of San José de las Lajas, and Universidad Pedagógica Rubén Martínez Villena, located in Melena del Sur.
Quite linked to the tourist offer, a place has been created in Madruga to satisfy the curiosity of European visitors: La Casa de Freddy (Freddy's Place), where the visitor gets in touch with the ritual of syncretic cults and buys objects related to these cults, spread all over the Caribbean.
In San Antonio de los Baños cultural life is quite intense. Its inhabitants treasure testimonies of the long life of graphic humor in Cuba, a genre that has much to do with the idiosyncrasy of the Cuban, joyful and enterprising.
The Ariguanabo river and the weeping-willow that stands by its waters have been a recurrent motif of inspiration for composers and poets. Hailing from this region, singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, proclaims in his songs the pride he feels for his rural origins, which add freshness and spontaneity to his music.
In San Antonio are celebrated the international biennials of humor, which gather hundreds of visitors linked to that art. There is located also the International School of Cinema, where young students from all over the globe are formed.
The presence of a special reserve area, "Rancho Azucarero" in the town of Artemisa shows the exuberance of tropical rainforest to the visitors that can also admire the ruins of an ancient coffee-tree plantation.
